Q1: I can't connect to the voice servers.

User who connect through a firewall (not configured properly) or proxy server may not be able use the voice feature.

- Firewall...

Configure the Firewall properly then voice will work fine.

Protocol UDP

SmartDoodle Servers

SDService.exe

DCServer.exe

DBServer.exe

MDServer.exe

DFEServer.exe

VoiceServer.exe

Port : 80

- Proxy Server...

Right now SmartDoodle will not work behind the Proxy Server but it works fine behind a NAT Server(Network Address Translation Server).

Q2: Device is already in use?

SmartDoodle cannot access your microphone because Windows indicates that device is already in use by another program. One of the following steps should correct the problem (try them in order):
  • Every so often, this error is also displayed if system resources are very low. To solve this, close all other applications running on your computer.
  • Restart SmartDoodle.
  • Shutdown and restart your computer.

Q3:Cannot Hear/Not Heard?

  1. Left-click on the Speaker icon in your system tray (on the bottom-right corner of your screen) one time and raise the volume bar to the top. Make sure Mute is not checked. (If the icon is not there, click Start and select Settings, Control Panel and Multimedia or Sounds and Multimedia. Make sure that the Show volume control on the task bar option is checked and click OK at the bottom of the window).
  2. If that's not sufficient, double-click on the Speaker icon. Make sure that none of the options are muted and that all levels are turned above 50%.
  3. Click on Options, Properties, Recording and click the OK at the bottom of the window. Make sure that Microphone Balance is the only option selected and the level is turned up above 50%.
  4. Close the window and try to use Voice.

Perform this simple test to determine whether your Microphone and Speakers are connected and adjusted properly:

  1. If you are currently in a voice chat conference, close the conference window.
  2. Close any other programs you have open that may be using your microphone or speakers.
  3. Click the Windows Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  4. Select Programs, Accessories, Entertainment or Multimedia and click Sound Recorder.
  5. Click on the Record button (a red circle), say a few words into your microphone, then click the Stop button (a black square). While recording, you should see the sound waves from your voice displayed on the strip chart at the top of the Sound Recorder window.
  6. Click the Play button (a black triangle) to hear what you just recorded.
  7. If you do not hear anything but see the sound waves from your voice, then something is wrong with your Speaker setup. If you do not see the sound waves from your voice, then the problem is with your Microphone setup.

Q4: Why is their voice choppy?

If you experience static, choppy voice, or voice delay, it may be due to the following factors:

Time of day:

The time of day you try to use voice chat can drastically affect voice quality due to the number of users trying to access our servers at one time. Peak hours are mid-morning and late evening (Pacific Time).

Connection speed:

In order for voice chat to work properly, ensure you are using a 56K modem (or faster connection). Sending sound over the Internet requires a lot more bandwidth than sending text.

Region:

The location to which you are trying to voice chat can also affect voice transmission. Different geographical locations may receive better transmission of voice packets than other areas.

Q5: Why is there an echo?

An echo is caused when your voice is picked up by friend's microphone and transmitted back to you. Have you tried using a headset? You can use the Hands-free mode without an echo. If you prefer to use speakers and microphones instead of a headset, one or more of the following may be used to reduce far-end echo problems (the person that needs to take these steps is not the person hearing the echo but the person at the far end of the conversation):

  • Move the microphone away from the speakers as far as practical.

  • Reduce the microphone level (using the volume control on the left, below the Talk button). Try talking directly into the microphone to be heard clearly.

  • Reduce the speaker level (using the volume control on the right).

Q6: Why is echo cancellation needed?

A: In a hands-free conferencing environment, the voice signal being transmitted through the speakers is frequently picked up by the microphone, which re-transmits that audio through the speakers a second time, creating an "acoustic loop".
When an acoustic loop occurs, the result can be unwanted echo and howling, and generally very poor audio quality for conference participants. In order to achieve good quality audio, conferencing users have either been limited to cumbersome headsets or were forced purchase expensive echo-cancellation microphones.

ClearMic technology features a state-of-the art Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and advanced algorithms that allow the ClearMic to actively listen for and cancel out any acoustic loop before it occurs, resulting in echo-free conferencing capabilities for users who require hands free audio without sacrificing quality.

Q7: I don't seem to be getting any echo cancellation from the microphone, what can I do?

A: You can take several steps to troubleshoot your Microphone:

  • Be sure the Microphone is connected properly. If your speakers are not connected to the cable of the Microphone, or it is not plugged into the proper ports on your computer, it may not function properly.

  • While using the Microphone, tap directly on the top. If the audio heard is light rapping or in-distinct, you are not using the Microphone as your source. If a loud tapping noise is heard, you are using the proper input.

  • Some applications allow for a 'boost' or '+20db', be sure this is turned off. This is a powered Microphone and does not require additional support from your audio hardware in this manner.

  • Unplug the Microphone for 5 seconds from the wall; this should reset the 'learned environment' of the Microphone.

Q8: My voice sounds over-powered. What should I do?

A: Follow these steps in Windows, to turn off 'Mic Boost':

  • Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment (or Multimedia),
    Volume Control.

  • In the Volume Control window, click options, properties.

  • In the properties window, select the radio button besides 'Recording'.

  • In the list of controls be sure Microphone has a check mark. Click OK.

  • On the options menu, be sure that 'Advanced Controls' has a check
Mark (if it does not click on it, and it will turn on).
  • Underneath Microphone click the 'Advanced' button.
  • There should be a check box beside 'Mic Boost' or '+20db', if there is
a check mark in the box, remove it.
  • Click 'Close'.
